New Book and Lyrics by David Eden
Conductor: David Adams
This recording is not in my personal collection, but Ian Bond provided the following mini-review:
I think this was one of the most damaging (to Sullivan's reputation) recordings ever to be issued. It was, quite frankly, dreadful, and I understand that Rare Recorded Editions were suitably embarrased about it in the long term. David Eden did of course make amends in 1994 with a new version whic left Burnand's lyrics intact and concentrated on the dialogue… Personally I don't feel that the original Chieftain is nearly as bad as everybody claims. After all, it did enjoy a performance history in Germany and Austria, and I feel that a good 'period' production would prove most enjoyable.
