This Mikado and a Pirates
issued at about the same time were the first two recordings by the New
D'Oyly Carte Opera Company after its reformation in the late eighties. It is a
competent recording distinguished by excellent orchestral playing and a score
corrected from Sullivan's autograph by Dr. David Russell Hulme. Of particular
interest, it contains the two-verse version of "Were you not to Ko-Ko plighted."
In a field crowded with many Mikados to choose from, this one is
certainly worth a look.
