This was the fourth in Ohio Light Opera's traversal of the G&S canon, following
two very good recordings
(Princess Ida and
Utopia, Limited), and one less successful
(The Grand Duke).
Whatever one may think of the previous OLO issues, there was at least a compelling
rationale for them: all three operas were under-represented in the catalogue. But
with its move into the standard repertory, OLO starts to compete with recordings
with all-star British casts and the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in its prime. It
seems to me doubtful that Ohio Light Opera can make the case, except to completist
collectors who must have everything.
