A number of matrix number discrepancies in the

and some mistyped matrix numbers fixed,
thanks to Chris Webster. See especially:

The dating of many issues of the electrical sets has been
fixed, thanks to detailed input from Chris Webster and Bruce Miller.

-
Version 12.02 — January 6, 1998 (414 pages)
-
This is another primarily fix-up release. Thanks to Stan DeOrsey,
Bob Lang, Bruce Miller, and J. Donald Smith for pointing out my
too-numerous mistakes. Other changes are as follows:
-
Added Dan Aron's comments to the 1966 Mikado.
-
Moved the discussion of Lloyd Harris's
W. S. Gilbert: A Musical Biography
from the Derivative Works section to
the Solo Recitals section, where it more
accurately belongs. Also, added a couple of cross-references from
this page to the Sullivan section.
-
Added to the discussions of
Pineapple Poll,
Sullivan's cello concerto, and
the Mackerras Telarc series
based on a recent interview with Sir Charles published on
Savoynet.
-
Added scanned album covers to:
1925 Ida,
1955 Ida,
1965 Ida,
1907 Odeon Mikado,

1950 Mikado,
1958 Mikado,
1973 Mikado,
Sargent/EMI Mikado,
Groucho Marx Mikado, and
G&S For All Pirates.
-
Made technical changes to the implementation of the
home page so that it would display
on 640 x 460 monitors without requiring horizontal scrolling.
If these changes are successful, they will be applied to all
other pages having this problem in a future release.
-
Version 12.01 — December 30, 1997 (413 pages)
-
This is mainly a fix-up release to correct a number of typos and
broken links. Thanks to Stan DeOrsey,
Marc Kenig, and Chris Webster for catching my errors.
-
In addition, Chris Webster found a number of instances of alternate
takes that were included in some copies of the vintage D'Oyly Carte
sets. See, in particular,
the 1917 Mikado,
1919 Gondoliers,
1920 Yeomen,
1921 Patience, and
1931 Yeomen.
-
I've added some additional background to the
Essgee Pirates.
-
It is also worth noting that some recordings have been redated.
Two years ago, when I launched the site, I decided to date recordings
based on when they were first publication. I have since concluded
that the date of recording, where known, is more useful.
The following recordings are affected:
-
Version 12.0 — December 24, 1997 (413 pages)
-
The Sullivan Section of the Discography
is now open for business. It has actually been there, "under construction,"
for a number of months, but it is now officially part of the site.
This section is devoted to recordings of Sullivan's non-operatic music.
In addition, every Sullivan composition is listed, even if it has never
been recorded.
Please note: there are some recordings that belong here that I haven't
yet had the chance to add, including quite a few that people have emailed
me about. Rest assured that all these emails are in a "to do" folder and
will be dealt with in time.
-
Significantly expanded issue histories and recording details for all
recordings that were originally issued on 78rpm records. (This includes D'Oyly
Carte sets recorded up to about 1950.) Many of these were issued in a variety
of formats that were previously not listed. In addition, the matrix numbers,
recording dates (where known) and contents of each side are shown.
-
Added Charles Schlotter's humorous
Thespis Discography.
-
Added scanned LP album cover shots for most recordings of
Pinafore,
Pirates,
Patience,
Iolanthe that
have ever appeared in that format.
-
Added a number of G&S television productions. My policy is that, as
G&S productions have been so rarely televised, every television
production is relevent—even though many of them have never been available
on home video, and some are no longer even extant:
-
Added the 1926 D'Oyly Carte Mikado film.
(Thanks to Peter Parker.)
-
Added a copy of the lyrics of
Flanders & Swann's "In the D'Oyly Cart".
(Thanks to Arthur Robinson.)
-
Added two G&S excerpts sets from the acoustical era,
the 1907 HMV Gondoliers and
the 1908 HMV Pinafore.
-
Added or expanded cast list information for:
-
Added a blurb on the pornographic 1970s film
The Naughty Victorians,
which had a G&S soundtrack. (Thanks to David Cantor.)
-
Added the following overture discs:
-
Added catalog numbers of the Acorn re-issues of the National Musicale
Pinafore,
Pirates, and
Mikado. (Thanks to Rebecca Consentino
and J. Donald Smith.)
-
Added informational pages on:
